Do today's Conservatives really believe Dixiecrats were Liberals?

Pre-1970s Democrats in the south (Dixiecrats) often voted with Republicans. They couldn't join the Republican Party because of the GOP's association with Lincoln, the North and the Civil War. Lyndon Johnson's Civil Rights Act changed all that.
